During the week ending May 11, steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market have indicated a slight downtrend, while overall transaction activity in the market has been at low levels.
At the beginning of the given week, increases in futures prices of iron ore and finished steel provided support for the stable movement of domestic steel plate prices. As of the middle of the week, steel plate prices in some regions where inventories were high have moved on a downtrend against the backdrop of decreases in futures prices of iron ore and finished steel. As a result, sentiment among market participants has been negatively impacted. At the same time, iron ore prices have edged up above $60/mt, which will provide a certain degree of support for steel plate prices from the cost side. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move down slightly in the coming week, especially as no significant improvement has been seen in demand from downstream users.
