Vietnamese finance minister Vuong Dinh Hue has stated that the country needs to review preferential electricity charges for certain industrial sectors including steel and cement. It is thought that such preferential treatment may be discontinued in the future.

According to the figures from Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, the steel and cement sectors consumed more than 11 percent of Vietnam's total power production in 2010 at a price of only VND 914/kWh ($ 0.04/kWh). Accordingly, it is estimated that the two industries saved VND 2.547 trillion ($120 million) in 2010 from preferential power supply charges.
