According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in February this year increased by 1.7 percent from January and were down 25.0 percent year on year to total 1,525,665 mt. In terms of value, US steel imports in February totaled $1.47 billion, compared to $2.3 million in January and $1.09 billion in February 2025.
Top sources for US steel imports in February include: South Korea with 276,937 mt, Brazil with 223,690 mt, Canada with 204,329 mt, and Mexico with 159,191 mt.
By product group, semi-finished imports totaled 434,653 mt in February, up from 348,353 mt in January and down from 543,846 mt in February 2025. Flat product imports totaled 375,780 mt in February, down from 454,968 mt in January and down from 736,460 mt in February 2025. Long product imports totaled 347,431 mt in February, down from 358,457 mt in January and down from 353,346 mt in February last year. Pipe and tube imports amounted to 306,550 mt in February, down from 262,929 mt in January and down from 317,909 mt in February 2025.
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, the share of imports in the US steel market was estimated at 15 percent in both February and the first two months this year.
