As reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended July 21, 2007, raw steel production in the US decreased by 0.2 percent from the previous week, dropping to 2.118 million net tons (nt).
The previous week's numbers showed 2.124 million nt of raw steel produced by the US. Steel production for the week ended July 21, 2007 was up 1.4 percent from the 2.087 million net tons produced the same week of last year.
The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended July 21, 2007, with a total output of 675,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with 515,000 nt.
Year-to-date net tonnage as of July 21, 2007 registered at 58.6 million nt with mills working at an average capacity utilization rate of 84.3 percent. This compares to YTD net tonnage of 62.4 million nt on July 21, 2006 with an average capacity utilization rate of 90.2 percent.
