US raw steel production down 9 percent year-on-year

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending October 17, 2015, US domestic raw steel production was 1,675,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 70.1 percent. Production was 1,840,000 net tons in the week ending October 17, 2014 while the capability utilization then was 76.5 percent. The current week production represents a 9.0 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending October 17, 2015 is down 1.8 percent from the previous week ending October 10, 2015 when production was 1,705,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 71.3 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through October 17, 2015 was 71,199,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 72.4 percent. That is down 8.0 percent from the 77,406,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 77.8 percent.
