US plates in coil imports up 17.9 percent in May

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 117,974 mt in May 2023, up 17.9 percent from April and down 65.2 percent from May 2022 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $125.6 million in May 2023, compared to $94.0 million in April and $161.2 million in May 2022.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in May, with 67,106 mt, compared to 56,047 mt in April and 80,940 mt in May 2022. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in May include Mexico, with 20,517 mt; Netherlands, with 9,796 mt; Germany, with 7,974 mt; and Sweden, with 4,274 mt.
