US plates in coil imports down 20.2 percent in August

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 87,926 mt in August 2023, down 20.2 percent from July and down 34.2 percent from August 2022 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $85.7 million in August 2023, compared to $109.9 million in July and $155.1 million in August 2022.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in August, with 47,381 mt, compared to 59,641 mt in July and 61,451 mt in August 2022. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in August include Mexico, with 10,510 mt; Netherlands, with 8,374 mt; France, with 6,214 mt; and South Korea, with 4,347 mt.
