US iron ore output up 33.6 percent in May from April

US iron ore production in May this year amounted to 3.66 million mt, increasing by 33.6 percent compared to April and up 1.1 percent year on year, according to figures from the Mineral Industry Survey released by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Meanwhile, US iron ore export shipments in May this year totaled 4.71 million mt, increasing by 9.8 percent compared to the previous month and down by 12.8 percent compared to May 2015. 
 
In the first five months of this year, US iron ore production totaled 15.4 million mt, falling by 24.8 percent compared to the January-May period of 2015, while US iron ore export shipments amounted to 12.1 million mt, decreasing by 3.2 percent year on year.
