US DOC: Steel demand up 42.3 percent

According to data released by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission, year-to-date domestic steel demand from January to August 2010 is up 42.3 percent from the same period in 2009.

DOC data also shows that US imports of all steel mill products in October were $1.8 billion, compared to preliminary September totals of $1.9 billion.

According to the latest data from the three NAFTA countries, China's share of imports into Canada, the US, and Mexico countries fell to 3.9 percent in August 2010 from 4.5 percent in July and 4.1 percent in June 2010. The volume of steel imports from China into NAFTA countries increased 167.7 percent from August 2009 to August 2010. Total August 2010 steel imports into NAFTA countries from the world were 104.5 percent higher in volume than August 2009.
