US auto sales rise to highest level since 2008

The US' three major automakers, Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Company and General Motors all reported substantially improved car sales in December and for the full year 2011.

Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler reported US sales of 138,019 units in December, a 37 percent increase compared with sales in December 2010 and the group's best monthly sales since May 2008. December also marked the 21st consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. Additionally, Chrysler Group sales totaled 1.37 million units for the full year 2011, a 26 percent jump versus 2010.

Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company reported sales of 201,737 units in December, reflecting a 16 percent increase from a year earlier. For the full year 2011, US sales increased 17 from 2010 to 2,062,915 vehicles.

Detroit, Michigan-based General Motors sold 234,351 units in December--a 4.5 percent increase over December 2010. For the period January to December 2011, GM's US vehicle sales increased 13 percent to 2.5 million units.
