US and Canadian rig counts move upward

Baker Hughes has reported that for the week ending January 20, the US rotary rig count increased by 35 to 694 following a six-rig decrease the week before. The number of rigs drilling for gas increased by six to 142, while the number of rigs drilling for oil increased by 29 to 551. The overall rig count is now up by 57 rigs in a year-on-year comparison.
 
Meanwhile, the Canadian rig count rose by 27 to 342 rigs in the week ending January 20, following a 110-rig increase the week before. The Canadian rig count is now up by 92 rigs from the same week a year ago.
