In December last year, Turkey's scrap import volume decreased by 32 percent year on year and by 15.6 percent month on month to 1.29 million metric tons, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of these imports totaled $434.15 million, down 39.8 percent year on year and decreasing by 23.1 percent compared to the previous month.
Meanwhile, in 2014, Turkey imported 19.07 million mt of scrap, down 3.3 percent, with a value of $7.15 billion, down 4.8 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
In 2014, Turkey imported 3.99 million mt of scrap from the US, 22.7 percent lower year on year, with the US ranking first among Turkey's main scrap import sources, ahead of Russia which supplied 2.81 million mt in the given period, up 37.2 percent year on year. Meanwhile, in December, the US was the leading source for Turkey's scrap imports, supplying 258,158 mt, down 14.9 percent year on year.
