Mexican steelmaker Ternium Mexico has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) environment certification, the company said this week.

The LEED certification, which verifies resource and energy efficient buildings, was awarded to the company’s Pesqueria complex, located in the city of Pesqueria, in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon by the US Green Building Council.

Luis Rechy, environment director at Ternium Mexico, said the company’s Pesqueria complex is Ternium’s first mill and the country’s first flats mill to receive the certification.

Ternium invested $1.1 billion at the Mexican steel industrial complex. Recently, Ternium Mexico also invested $74 million at its Guerrero mill, located in the city of San Nicolas de los Garza, to improve its environmental performance.
