US-based Harsco Environmental, a global provider of environmental solutions and services for the steel and metal industries, announced it has renewed three-year contracts with companies in the Mexican unit of Luxembourg-based steelmaker Ternium. The joint deals are for $88 million, reported the US company in a press release.
The contracts are with the companies Ternium in Monterrey and Largos Norte, both located in the vicinity of the metropolitan area of the capital of Nuevo Leon.
Among the services that Harsco Environmental will provide to Ternium Mexico companies are the transportation and processing of slag, metal recovery, scrap handling and raw material handling, among others.
According to the American company, these services are crucial to optimize operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices within the steel manufacturing process.
According to the steel company Gerdau Corsa, 93 percent of the steel produced in Mexico is made from scrap. Data from the World Steel Association ranks Mexico as the fifteenth largest steel producer in the world.
Although Mexico is a deficit country in steel, in the last 30 years, the balance of the steel trade balance is negative for Mexico. In 2022, the steel trade deficit exceeded $17.0 billion.
In 2022, the import of metal scrap to the Mexican market registered a historical record with $1.39 billion, 8.7 percent more than in 2021.
