Tata Steel Europe, the European unit of the India-based steel giant Tata Steel, has announced that it has completed a £1.3 million upgrade of its Metallurgical Laboratory at its Port Talbot site in South Wales, UK, allowing the company to further improve the quality of steel products used in the automotive sector.

The investment replaces steel-strength testing equipment and upgrades facilities with the latest robotic testing equipment, supporting efforts to ensure products continue to meet or exceed customer requirements. Tata Steel supplies almost 50 percent of the steel for UK carmakers, for use in body panels, chassis components and wheels. Increasingly these are technologically advanced high strength steel grades.

“This upgrade guarantees that steel for the automotive sector meets the necessary customer and product specifications in the longer term. It has enhanced a vital part of the Port Talbot steelworks,” stated Peter Barnes, section manager technical laboratories at Tata Steel Europe.
