Tata Steel to expand Jamshedpur capacity

Tata Steel has announced that it intends to expand the annual capacity of its Jamshedpur plant from five million metric tons to 10 million metric tons by 2009-2010. In the first phase of the expansion, Tata Steel will boost the capacity of the Jamshedpur plant to 6.8 million metric tons by 2007-2008 with the existing blast furnaces. The productivity of the existing blast furnaces will be increased with a steel melting shop constructed for this purpose. After enhancing the capacity to 6.8 million metric tons, a second phase of capacity expansion for around three million metric tons will be carried out with a view to increasing capacity up to 10 million metric tons.
