Tata Steel has announced that it intends to expand the annual capacity of its Jamshedpur plant from five million metric tons to 10 million metric tons by 2009-2010. In the first phase of the expansion, Tata Steel will boost the capacity of the Jamshedpur plant to 6.8 million metric tons by 2007-2008 with the existing blast furnaces. The productivity of the existing blast furnaces will be increased with a steel melting shop constructed for this purpose. After enhancing the capacity to 6.8 million metric tons, a second phase of capacity expansion for around three million metric tons will be carried out with a view to increasing capacity up to 10 million metric tons.
