The local government of the city of Tangshan in China's Hebei Province has announced in 2011 it will continue to push forward the elimination of backward production capacities in eight main industrial sectors, including steel and coking, and will continue its efforts to save energy and reduce emissions. Accordingly, in Tangshan, all blast furnaces below 400 m3 and steelmaking converters and electric furnaces under 30 mt are planned to be eliminated by the end of 2011.

In the first three quarters of 2010, the Tangshan authorities eliminated 11 blast furnaces below 300 m3 capacity, equivalent to 2.77 million mt of iron-making capacity, and two coke furnaces, equivalent to 200,000 mt of capacity in the coking sector.
