Swedish specialty steel producer SSAB has announced that, together with Finland-based energy company Fortum, it will explore the possibilities of producing fossil-free sponge iron in Raahe and also of building a hydrogen production plant.

The study is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

In addition, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026, the Oxelösund mill will be able to use a flexible mix of fossil-free sponge iron and scrap as the raw material to produce steel without carbon emissions.
