South Korean steelmaker POSCO Holdings Chairman Jang In-hwa has emphasized the importance of stronger international cooperation to support the steel industry’s decarbonization transition. He delivered the message during the World Steel Association (worldsteel) executive committee meeting held in Berlin.
Decarbonization seen as shared industry challenge
Speaking alongside senior executives from leading global producers, Jang stated that decarbonization remains a common challenge for the sector, particularly amid slowing demand and rising energy costs.
He stressed that coordinated efforts are necessary to accelerate emissions reductions across the global steel value chain.
Focus on fair market value for green steel
Jang presented POSCO’s decarbonization roadmap and highlighted the need to ensure that low-emission steel products achieve fair market valuation.
According to the company, stronger collaboration could help align market mechanisms with sustainability goals.
Strategic discussions with global partners
On the sidelines of the meeting, POSCO held bilateral discussions with key industry leaders, including JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal and representatives from China’s steel sector. The talks focused on overseas investment opportunities, carbon reduction technologies, and supply chain stability.
Discussions at the meeting addressed broader challenges facing the steel industry, including the ongoing energy crisis, geopolitical risks, and the need for internationally aligned carbon accounting standards.
POSCO’s sustainability efforts were recognized at the event, with the company receiving the Steel Sustainability Champion award from worldsteel for the fifth consecutive year.
