Germany-based plantmaker SMS Siemag has officially commissioned a single-strand continuous slab caster for the production of 1,300 mm wide slabs at the Angul, Orissa plant of Indian steelmaker Bhushan Steel Ltd.

With the first trial casting at the end of April this year, 70 mt of crude steel were cast and the first three slabs were produced for tube manufacturing.

SMS Siemag's supply included plant, process and automation engineering, and equipment. The new caster has a mold with resonance oscillation to improve the surface quality of the strand, as well as the entire strand guide system.

Bhushan Steel produces quality steel for the automotive industry and sophisticated pipe grades for the Indian and international markets.
