SMS Demag to supply X-Melt® converter shop to IISCO

German plantmaker SMS Demag has announced the receipt of an order from Indian steel producer IISCO Steel Plant for the supply of an X-Melt® converter shop for the production of quality steel grades at the Burnpur location, West Bengal.

The order includes SMS Demag's basic and detail engineering for all of the mechanical core components and the complete X-Pact® electrical equipment and automation package, the supply, erection, commis¬sioning, supervision, and also the training of the operating personnel.

The new steelworks, with an annual production capacity estimated at 2.6 million mt of liquid steel, is to comprise three converters each with a tapping weight of 150 mt, three stirring stations, two ladle furnaces, an RH-TOP vacuum recirculation degassing plant, the primary and secondary gas cleaning systems and a converter off-gas recovery system.

The new X-Melt® shop will replace a still existing open-hearth steel plant over the medium term and is scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2010.
