Shanxi, China's second largest coal producing province, accounted for more than one quarter of the country's total coal output in 2013, according to the Shanxi Coal Industry Bureau.
China produced a total of 3.692 billion mt of coal in 2013, 91 percent of which came from the 14 large-sized coal bases in the country, including three in the eastern, central and northern areas of Shanxi. Last year, 960 million mt of coal was mined in Shanxi, equal to 26 percent of the total national output.

The combined coal output of China's 14 large-sized coal bases was 3.36 billion mt  in 2013. These large bases are located in Jindong (eastern Shanxi), and Jinzhong (central Shanxi), Jinbei (northern Shanxi), Northern Shaanxi, Huanglong, Ningdong (eastern Ningxia), Shendong (Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia), Mengdong (eastern Inner Mongolia), Xinjiang, Jizhong (central Hebei), Luxi (western Shandong), Henan, Lianghuai (northern and southern Anhui) and Yungui (Yunnan & Guizhou).

Shanxi Province is the province with the largest number of large-sized coal bases in China, with each of its three bases having a production capacity of more than 100 million mt annually.
Jinbei coal base is a super-large thermal coal base, consisting of six mining areas in Datong, Pingshuo, Shuonan, Xuangang, Hebaopian and Lanxian. Jinzhong base covers mining areas in Xishan, Dongshan, Fenxi, Huozhou, Liliu, Xiangning, Huodong and Shixi, with recoverable coal reserves of 19.2 billion mt. Jindong base is China's biggest and most important high quality anthracite production base, composed of four mining areas; Jincheng, Lu'an, Yangquan and Wuxia.
