Severstal gets green light for new Russian longs mill

The Russian steel producer Severstal has announced that it has received the green light from state experts for the construction of its new longs rolling mini-mill, Severstal-Long Product Mill Balakovo, which will be built at Balakovo in Russia's Saratov region.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, Severstal's new mini-mill will have an annual production capacity of one million mt of billets which will be rolled into structural steel products for use in the local market. The investment in the mill's construction will amount to more than $600 million.

The main equipment for Severstal's new longs rolling mill, which will include a new 125-mt  finger shaft electric arc furnace, a new 125-mt ladle furnace, the associated primary and secondary dedusting facilities and a five-strand high speed billet caster, will be supplied by Austria-based giant engineering and plantmaking company Siemens VAI Metals Technologies (Siemens VAI).
