The World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced that Russia has requested consultations with the US regarding the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, stating that these measures adversely affect exports of these products from Russia to the US.

In its submission, Russia stated that the Section 232 measures of the US appear to be inconsistent with the provisions of the WTO's General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994 and the Agreement on Safeguards and these measures of the US nullify or impair the benefits accruing to Russia directly or indirectly under the cited agreements.

Last month, Russia’s economic development minister Maxim Oreshkin stated that Russia would impose additional import duties on certain products from the US, which have alternatives in the Russian market, in response to the Section 232 tariffs.
