Reduced output of quake-hit Japanese mills affects Chinese auto manufacturers

China's automobile manufacturers have been affected by the suspended or reduced production of Japanese steel enterprises caused by the massive earthquake which hit Japan on March 11, China's National Development and Reform Commission has stated.

China usually imports silicon steel, auto sheet and other high-end steel products from Japan. Some Chinese automobile manufacturers have already started to seek alternative sources of supply for such products.

The March 11 earthquake is thought likely to impact 10-15 percent of Japan's iron and steel production capacity, or about 26 million mt, the NDRC stated.
