Public hearing for import lisencing by DOC

In order to protect the US steel industry from the import surge President Bush implemented safeguard measures on Mach 5, 2002. These safeguard measures in the form of import tariffs ranging from 8% to 30% were effective as from March 20, 2002. President Bush authorised the US Trade Representative Office to review the import data on quarterly basis in order to follow remarkable increases in imports which would form a basis for immediate consultations and inclusions, even if the exporter country is a developing country. The Import Administration is delegated to establish an internet-based steel licensing and surge monitoring system which will include an online registration system for importers, an automatic license issuence system and an import surge monitoring system. DOC will issue a rule with this regard after a public hearing on August 19, 2002.
