Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that Indonesian steelmaker PT. Gunung Garuda has started to produce beam blanks with its new four-strand beam blank caster supplied by its Switzerland-based subsidiary SMS Concast as a replacement for an older caster at PT. Gunung Garuda’s plant in Bekasi. The new beam blank caster produces two section sizes in special bar quality (SBQ) at an increased capacity of 800,000 mt per year.
According to SMS, the new beam blank caster is capable of operating in the mixed casting mode, casting two different sections simultaneously. With the mixed mode, it is also possible to cast only three instead of four strands. This allows PT. Gunung Garuda to flexibly react to the market demand and strengthen its competitive position.
