On December 19, two new steel groups, Tangshan Bohai Steel Group and Tangshan Changcheng Steel Group, were formally established from the integration of 12 and 27 steel companies respectively, thus marking a significant advance in the restructuring of the steel industry in Tangshan city, Hebei Province.

The two steel groups in question will boast a total production capacity of 28 million mt per year, accounting for 51.7 percent of the overall production in Tangshan city. The two steel groups are to carry out equipment reconstruction work resulting in no change in overall steel production capacity. Under this scheme, blast furnaces in a size range of 200 to 300 cubic meters are to be eliminated. Meanwhile, the steel production capacity in Tangshan city is to be kept below the 50 million mt mark by the year 2012.
