No delays in orders but work problems at Egyptian ports

Egypt, the world's biggest wheat importer, said this week that there were no shipment delays on contracted wheat orders, according to a Reuters report.

But shipping sources said the Mediterranean terminals, known especially for handling bulk and container shipments including grains, had been affected by the daily curfew across the country. Cargo operations at Egypt's Alexandria and Damietta ports have come to a virtual standstill as widespread unrest keeps key staff from work and throws the economy into turmoil, shipping sources said earlier this week.

The Canal Authority reported the same day that the movement of traffic through the Suez Canal was unaffected. Shipping sources said the Egyptian military had increased deployments at the canal and other strategically important sites such as the Sumed oil pipeline, which links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

In the meantime there are conflicting reports coming in every day, and recently SteelOrbis has also been told that a vessel started to discharge a steel cargo at Alexandria port.
