According to local media reports, in February this year Moldavian Metallurgical Plant (MMZ) plans to restart operations at its steelmaking shop units, stopped in July 2009.

Steel production, which until the global crisis was the leader in industrial output in the Transnistrian region of Moldova, amounted to value of $142.3 million in the region in 2010, registering a decrease of 27.1 percent compared to 2009. The decrease in question was due to the stoppage at MMZ.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, such a difficult situation at MMZ in 2010 was caused not only by the crisis, but also by the need of the plant to repay preferential credits provided under the Transnistrian authorities' anti-crisis program. MMZ had to repay amounts totaling about $10.6 million.
