Mexico’s economy secretariat, SE, has updated a list of steel products that must request pre-approval to get exported, it said this week.

As previously anticipated by SteelOrbis in August, Mexico has established a new pre-approval permit system for steel exports to the US and Canada.

The new system is aimed to prevent certain steel exports to the US from other countries, such as China, from being routed through Mexico and/or pretending to have been produced in Mexico.

SE unveiled an extensive list of steel products that must comply with the pre-approval system. The list includes a wide range of pipes and bars, from structural, galvanized, mechanic, as well as carbon, to hot and cold rolled pipes.

Some of the products subject to the pre-approval permit fall under the HS codes 7304.31.01, 7304.31.99, 7304.39.01, 7304.39.02 and 7304.39.03. To export those products, exporters need to present a Mexican federal exporting registry, a certificate number for the rolling mill which produced the product, including its date of certificate, country of origin, detailed description of the product, quantity, among other details.
