Mexican production of iron pellets down 3.5 percent in January

Iron pellet production volume in Mexico decreased 3.5 percent in January, year-over-year, to 524,941 metric tons (mt). In value it decreased 26.4 percent nominal (without adjustment to eliminate inflation) to MXN 925.2 million (about $48.4 million), the national statistics agency Inegi reported today.

The average value of the metric ton of pellets in January was MXN 1,763/mt, a figure that at today's exchange rate represents $92.3/mt. In pesos, the price decreased 23.7 percent in nominal terms.

According to the report, the production volume of the four main steel minerals decreased 0.3 percent, compared to January 2022. The nominal value decreased 18.1 percent to MXN 1.44 billion (about $75.1 million).

Non-coking coal production totaled 371,148 mt, up 2.8 percent, year-over-year, in January. Coke totaled 37,205 mt, 2.8 percent more, and manganese production was 20,511 mt, 30.8 percent more.

Considering today's currency parity and the production value for January, average prices were $30.7/mt for non-coking coal, $296.3/mt for coke and $209.8/mt for manganese.
