Metalloinvest’s environmental project at OEMK enters final stage

Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:52:02 (GMT+3)   |
Russia-based leading global iron ore and hot briquetted iron (HBI) producer Metalloinvest has reported that it has begun the modernisation of the second gas purification unit at its electric arc furnace shop at OEMK (part of Metalloinvest).

The construction of the second gas purification unit is the final stage of a large-scale investment project to implement a new purification system for exhaust gases from steel furnaces at OEMK. The unit will allow OEMK to reduce its environmental impact, as well as increase steel production capacity.

The first part of the gas purification system was introduced at electric arc furnace shops EAF No. 3 and No. 4 in June 2013. As a result, residual dust content from exhaust gases fell by 2.5 times. This facilitated a reduction in dust emissions into the atmosphere from the two electric arc furnaces by more than 1.5 times. Dust levels in steelmaking workplaces fell by an average of 50 percent.

The new gas purification unit is planned to be launched in February 2016 at EAF No. 2 and in April 2016 at EAF No. 1.
