UK-based steelmaker Liberty Steel has stated that it has formed a partnership with China-based construction engineering company CISDI Engineering, in collaboration with the Hungarian Ministry of Economic Development, to decarbonize Hungary-based Dunaferr steelworks.

CISDI will supply a new 150-ton electric arc furnace with the latest in energy-efficient technology to Liberty Steel. The electric arc furnace technology will replace coal-based steelmaking, reducing direct carbon emissions by approximately 80 percent, and will significantly enhance the competitiveness of Dunaferr.

The Hungarian Ministry for Economic Development will explore how it can support the project, including exploring how to facilitate any required administrative processes for the establishment of the electric arc furnace.
