The world's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced a donation of over one million RMB to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to help the relief efforts in China following the earthquake that struck Sichuan on Monday, May 12.

In addition to the cash donation, ArcelorMittal is offering to design, technically support and build a new earthquake resistant school for the region. Arcelor contributed to the first anti-seismic school building in Izmit, Turkey, following the devastation of that area by an earthquake in 1999.

Meanwhile, other leading steel market players are also making donations to earthquake-stricken Sichuan and are encouraging their staff to give a hand in rescue works in the region.

Lu Jiucheng, president of Rio Tinto Group in Asia and China, recently made a donation of RMB 8 million ($1.15 million) during a gala event held and broadcast live by China Central Television on May 18 in support of the earthquake-hit region. Meanwhile, Taiwan-based Sinosteel has announced that it is donating NTD 100 million ($3.26 million) to help the Sichuan earthquake victims to rebuild their homes.
