Coal miners at eight Mittal Steel Temirtau mines in Kazakhstan have stopped a week-long strike following a Mittal Steel promise to double their wages, administration officials of the northern-Kazakh Karaganda region have stated. The leader of the coal miners trade union, Vyacheslav Sidorov stated that the striking miners and the management of Mittal Steel Temirtau have reached an understanding according to which miners' wages will be doubled from around $350 per month to $700 per month from October 1. In addition, the Mittal Steel management has guaranteed a bonus payment to miners which will be equal to 30 percent of their salary. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the coal miners went on strike after a methane gas explosion on September 20 killed 41 at Mittal Steel Temirtau's Lenin coal mine in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region.
