According to statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance, Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 381,991 metric tons in July this year, rising by 0.9 percent month on month and down 14.21 percent compared to July 2010. The country's ferrous scrap exports started to rise in June this year after two months of decrease following the earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan on March 11.
In July, Japan's ferrous scrap exports to China increased by 5.5 percent month on month to 196,487 metric tons, while a drop of 24.98 percent was registered compared to July 2010. South Korea imported 174,086 metric tons from Japan in July this year, down 7.5 percent month on month and up 18.59 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, in the January-July period of 2011, Japan's scrap exports amounted to 2.8 million metric tons, declining by 28.87 percent year on year.
In the first seven months of the year, Japanese scrap exports to China totaled 1.24 million metric tons, while exports to South Korea amounted to 1.51 million metric tons, decreasing by 20.99 percent and down 30.2 percent respectively, both compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
