Japan’s domestic steel consumption down 10.5 percent in January

In January this year, domestic steel product consumption in Japan amounted to 3.61 million metric tons, falling by 2.7 percent compared to December last year and by 10.5 percent year on year, according to the data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Association (JISF).

In the given month, steel product consumption in the construction sector in Japan moved down by 13.1 percent to 670,615 metric tons, while steel product consumption in the Japanese automotive sector amounted to 981,734 metric tons, down 4.1 percent, both on year-on-year basis. In January, Japan’s shipbuilding industry consumed 219,975 metric tons of steel products, down nine percent compared to the same month of 2022.
