Japan sets deadline of May 17 for tariff retaliation

Japan claims it is planning to retaliate for U.S. tariffs imposed by the Bush administration with the Section 201 ruling on May 17, unless the U.S. agrees to compensation. Japan has been considering hitting U.S. steel imports with tariffs of up to 100%. Meetings are scheduled between U.S. Trade Representative, Robert Zoellick and Japan's Trade, Economy and Industry Minister Takeo Hiranuma this week at the annual OECD ministerial conference in Paris. If Japan does end up retaliating, it would be the first time it has ever done so, officials say.
