Italian crude steel output amounted to 2.046 million mt in February this year, up by just 0.1 percent from the February 2019 output, according to the Italian steel producers association Federacciai. In comparison, Italian crude steel output had totaled 2.104 million mt in February 2018, 2.002 million mt in February 2017, and 1.949 million mt in February 2016.

Meanwhile, Italian crude steel output in the January-February period this year declined by 2.3 percent year on year to 3.921 million mt.

In the first two months this year, Italy's long steel output amounted to 1.969 metric tons, down 0.5 percent, while its flat steel output totaled 1.786 million metric tons, down 0.1 percent, both year on year.

For the month of March, it is expected that Italian production will record a significant decrease. As recently reported, many local long steel producers have suspended production activities in the face of the coronavirus emergency. To these were this week added flat producers, which started to reduce outputs due to the stoppages announced by several customers (mainly carmakers and pipemakers).
