India’s state-run iron ore miner NMDC Limited has shut down operations of its Bailadila mines in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, in line with the national lockdown imposed from March 25, a company source has told SteelOrbis.

The mining operations were shut down largely owing to restrictions laid down for the lockdown and impacting transportation, logistics and movement of mining workers.

The company’s Bailadila mining complex comprises two mines - Bacheli and Kirandul mines - capable of producing an estimated 24 million mt of high grade iron ore, contributing to the bulk of NMDC’s annual production capacity of around 35 million mt.

The sources, however, declined to comment on the operational status of its other mining complex at Dantewada, also located in Chhattisgarh.
