India-based fully-integrated flat carbon steel manufacturer Essar Steel has announced that it has secured an order from Abu Dhabi, UAE-based National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) for steel plates which will be used to build offshore platforms. With the order valued at $14 million and to be completed by July this year, Essar Steel states that it becomes the first steel producer in India to join the league of the top plate mills of Japan and the European Union.

Accordingly, Essar Steel will supply steel plates with widths of 2-4 m for N15 and N16 parts of the major engineering, procurement and construction project carried out by National Petroleum Construction Company to build offshore platforms at Mumbai High Field, India.

Established at a cost of approximately Rupees 20 billion ($0.4 billion), Essar Steel's plate mill has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million mt. The mill is capable of producing plates in thicknesses of 5-150 mm, widths of 900-4,900 mm and lengths of 3-25m, to be used in defense, oil and gas, boilers and pressure vessels, heavy duty earth-moving machines, wind towers, mine protective vehicles, and construction.
