Indian metallurgical coke or met coke producers have dropped plant capacity utilization levels to 30-35 percent in the face of rising imports, according to a statement from Indian Metallurgical Coke Manufacturers on Monday, July 17.

According to the domestic manufacturers, imports were up 40 percent to 1.03 million mt during the April-December period of 2022.

In response to a complaint lodged by domestic met coke producers, India’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has launched safeguard investigations into the rise of imports into the country after having prima facie established that such imports have “caused injury” to domestic producers.

According to industry estimates, total domestic met coke production capacity is currently 7 million mt annually.
