The Indian ferroalloy industry has asked their country's government to impose a customs duty of at least 10 percent on ferroalloy imports. The present tariff is nil.

According to Indian press reports, the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers Association has indicated that the sector is experiencing a huge drop in domestic demand as a result of the influx of cheap imports into the market.

The association has stressed that the import duty is currently nil for the industry which posted an output of 2.22 million mt in 2009. The association also pointed out that imports have rocketed since the previous 25 percent import duty gradually diminished starting from 2003, ending up at nil in 2008.
