According to a statement published on October 28 by southern Chinese steelmaker Guangzhou Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, the company has been ordered to reduce its carbon emissions by 50 percent in the period from October 1 up to December 20. So far, a boiler, a sinter machine and a blast furnace have been halted at the company's steelmaking facilities. During period in question, the company's hot rolled production line may be stopped and wire rod production may also be influenced.

This temporary enforced reduction in carbon emissions at Guangzhou Steel is due to the holding of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou on November 12-27. Meanwhile, on October 28 authorities in the city of Guangzhou said that a total of 72 power plants or industrial companies in the Guangzhou area will be ordered to stop or limit production, effective up to December 20.
