After months of consecutive sales gains from the US' three major carmakers, sales slowed in July for General Motors and Ford Motor Company.

General Motors reported that it sold 201,237 vehicles in July, 6.4 percent less than a year ago and 19 percent below June's total of 248,750. Ford's total US sales in July of 173,966 fell 4 percent year-on-year due to lower fleet sales, but July retail sales grew 2 percent compared with last year.

On the other hand, Chrysler Group reported total US sales of 126,089 units, a 13 percent increase over July 2011 sales and the best July sales since 2007. July also represented Chrysler's 28th consecutive month of year-on-year sales gains.
