Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for May 2007 rose 6.4 percent year on year to 112.2 million metric tons.
China is again the largest steel-producing country with crude steel production of 41.3 million metric tons in May, an increase of 15.7 percent from a year earlier. Total production in the Asian region amounted to 61.4 million metric tons, up 11.3 percent on a year ago.
Germany produced four million metric tons of crude steel in May 2007, an increase of 0.8 percent year on year. Italy registered a crude steel output for May 2007 of 2.8 million metric tons, down 1.8 percent on the figure for May 2006. France produced 1.8 million metric tons, a decrease of 0.8 percent compared to the same month in 2006. Production in the UK was 1.3 million metric tons, 3.7 percent higher than May 2006.
Brazil produced 2.9 million metric tons of crude steel in May, an increase of 16.2 percent compared to May 2006.
Turkey's crude steel production in May rose 15.1 percent year on year to 2.2 million metric tons. Total production in the Other Europe region was 2.8 million metric tons, an increase of 20.5 percent year on year.
