Local Sand Springs, Oklahoma news agencies reported Tuesday that Gerdau Ameristeel's mini mill in Sand Springs will be officially closed as of March 17 according to a letter plant workers received from the company.

Gerdau Ameristeel officials have said that the closure is due to current economic conditions, product demands, as well as perceived economic trends.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, Gerdau Ameristeel first announced plans to idle the Sand Springs mill on August 29, 2009 and despite expectations that the plant would reopen, the company then announced that the mill would remain idled for an undisclosed period of time on January 7, 2010.
