Fleet size owned by Chinese shipowners reaches 249.2 million gross ton

On September 12, Gao Haiyun, an inspector in the Bureau of Water Transportation, at China’s Ministry of Transportation, stated in the North Bund International Shipping Forum Press Release that by the end of August this year fleet size owned by Chinese shipowners reached 249.2 million gt, exceeding Greece and becoming the world’s largest ship-owning country.

Moreover, China’s port cargo and container throughput has ranked first in the world for many consecutive years, while maritime transportation carries about 95 percent of the country’s foreign trade transportation volume, playing a key role in guaranteeing the transportation of energy and other key raw materials.

In 2022, China’s port cargo throughput reached 15.685 billion mt, while container throughput amounted to 296 million TEUs.
