EU new car registrations up 6.8 percent in January-May

In May this year, new car registrations totaled 1,109,893 units in the European Union (EU), with an increase of 1.3 percent year on year, according to the latest figures issued by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Registrations in May increased for the 21st consecutive month on year-on-year basis.

In May, Spain (+14.0 percent), Italy (+10.8 percent) and the UK (+2.4 percent) were the major EU markets which recorded increases in new car registrations on year-on-year basis.

Meanwhile, in the January-May period new passenger car registrations in the EU increased to 5,805,367 units, up 6.8 percent year on year. All major markets posted growth and contributed to the overall upturn of the EU market. In this period, Spain saw an increase of 21.7 percent and Italy saw an increase of 15.2 percent, while new passenger car registrations in the UK rose by 5.7 percent, with registrations in France rising by 3.8 percent and with registrations in Germany up 3.6 percent, all year-on-year basis.
